My daughter's 2 new bottom teeth just came out. She is 7. Her baby teeth were white but these are not. They are Yellow!! Anyone had similar experience and know why??
She hasn't eaten anything out of the ordinary and did not have much medication when she was little. She was rarely sick. I am at a loss.

Does it look that abnormal ? In general primary teeth (baby teeth) are whiter than permanent teeth. Is the difference too striking ? It could just be normal. Primary teeth have a higher concentration of enamel than perm teeth hence the whiter colour.

Ruth at Clifford, i didn't take anything during pregnancy which is why it puzzles me.
bw. thanks for that. i didn't know. even so, they still look a lot yellower than normal.

did she have chicken pox or german measles at any point? my sister did at around 4 or 5 and her teeth came in yellow. our american pediatrician claimed that the pox or measles drains the calcium from the body, which can result in streaked or yellow teeth.
bw is right about permanent teeth coming in darker, however. maybe it is just the contrast???

abitnaive, interesting. yes. she did have chicken pox when she was 5. but most children do (at least before the vaccines are available), but most don't have yellow teeth??

hi mc. my youngest son has discoloured teeth (he has amelogenesis imperfecta where the enamel hasnt formed properly) and is under the care of the prince philip dental hospital. this is quite a rare condition but if you're worried check with your dentist.

Monster, thanks very much. I search on the internet but couldn't find any pictures. From what I read, it seems that the child's baby teeth are also affected. In my daughter's case, her baby teeth were all really nice - white, nicely spaced and even. How old is your son?

hi mc... my brother also had chicken pox and his teeth were fine. dr said the yellowing or streaky teeth is a lottery.

hi mc, my son is now ten and he too had gorgeous white baby teeth. his front 2 teeth will need veneers and so far we are looking at 4 back molars needing crowns. the dentist and the professor whose care my son is under both asked if i'd had a feever when i was pregnant (which i hadnt), otherwise his condition is heriditory. there are many good websites with photos, try: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amelogenesis_imperfecta. we started with a private dentist who referred us to the prince philip (there are many recommendations on this site re good dentists). we saw dr san of diestel & partners, tel2522 2099

Thanks everyone. I took my daugther to the dentist at Sanatorium Hospital yesterday. The Dr. told me that it is too early to tell if she has AI (the one Monster's son has), as she only has 2 bottom teeth half way out. But most likely not as hers are normal size and have no stains. The Dr. also mentioned the effect of the anti-biotic but said people don't take that anymore. Anyway, the bottom line is that the teeth look ok and some children just have yellower teeth. As long as it is not AI, I feel better.
