If you are bringing a bottle of defrosted BM out, is it a better idea to let it defrost naturally (in a ziplock bag inside your bag) or defrost the BM first before putting it in your bag?
How long can defrosted breast milk keep for?

Is your milk in 'cubes' or 'bags'?
How long will you be out for before you use it?
I put the 'cubes' in the bottle/container the night before in the fridge, and they are mostly defristed by morning. I do this with food cubes and milk cubes.
I then carry everything in a 'freezer-to-go' bag to keep it cold/frozen until ready for use.
I heat up by requesting a bowl and teapot of hot water.
I never give a bottle outside (easier to breastfeed), just food - but same idea.
good luck

Thanks for your replies! Let me clarify: I have a bottle of frozen BM that I would like my husband to feed bubs when he takes him out on his own.
Problem is that I'm not sure whether to defrost the bottle first at home or give my husband the frozen bottle and have it defrost in his bag whilst they are out. He won't have a keep cool bag with him so I'd be interested how long a bottle of defrosted BM will keep whilst he is out. Thanks again...

Wow, that is great your husband is doing that! How wonderful for him to spend time with baby and for you to get a break!
I really have no idea how long it will take to defrost. If your husband can plan to be at a restaurant around feeding time, he can request a bowl and hot water to finish melting the milkice and warming the bottle.
I would suggest moving bottle to fridge, and partially (1/2) defrosting before he goes.
But it really does depend on how long he will be out before the feed - and if he will be outside in the heat (then it might go off) or inside air-conditioning....
If you don't have a cool bag, you could wrap the bottle in some cloth (towel) to try to insulate it.
Enjoy your time alone!!

Thanks Crj! Hubby has offered to take the baby to the office with him on Sat. whilst I get a much-needed massage (anybody else find that breastfeeding really takes it out of your lower back?) So I guess we are looking at 1-2 hours in air conditioning.

Just be sure it stays cold before it is warmed for the feeding time to minimise bacteria growth. I bet he can put it in the fridge at work?
And enjoy your massage :)

Do not thaw breastmilk at room temperature. Keep the expressed breastmilk as cold as possible prior to using in an insulated cooler bag. If still frozen prior to using then thaw in a cup of hot water. Breast milk does not need to be warmed but take the chill off and bring to body temperature. Thawed breastmilk can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours but not re-frozen.

Thanks for your help, everyone. In the end, I expressed a bottle for hubby to bring to the office that morning so we didn't have to deal with keeping the frozen BM cool or defrosting it. Good to know for future reference though!
