I have seen a few products in the market that claims to wash out pesticides and fertilizers from vegetables. Do they work? These products claim that is has a strong alkaline base, what does that mean? I thought some pesticides and fertilizers are not water soluble so can it be washed out?

does the salt have to contain iodine? I'm not sure the store brand salts sold in HK contain iodine.
