I used baby reins on mine. The last pair I brought were from Mothercare.

The wrist tie is best for an older child.

Here is the link the UK Mothercare site for the Princess Pink Harness. It's suitable for 0 months (!) up.

They are an excellent idea. The harness also helps you to provide a bit of support if your little one starts to tumble.

I do wish more parents would use these - the number of times my heart has missed a beat when I see a parent (or grandparent) grabbing a child from the edge of the road after it has run off.

Sorry if I seem to be putting a damper on this discussion, but I thought these things were banned in the UK after a campaign by Esther Rantzen all those years ago on "That's Life". The reasoning was because some toddlers were still running off and then getting the trailing harnesses caught in lift doors, escalators, revolving doors etc causing injuries. Or my memory could be failing me because it was probably about 25 years ago.

They've never been banned. Defiently better to use. The full harness is the best (also these can be used for securing in high chairs and shopping trolleys), they are great when your childs a bit unsteady as you hold on to them and stop them falling over. The wrist straps are OK for older children but most will be able to take it off.

Many people don't like using reins, they say its like having a dog on a lead, but the reason people put dogs on leads is to keep them safe, stop them running into the roads etc, so why not do the same for your child.

If you want something that doesn't look or feel like reins, Bumps to Babes sell (or used to, at least) a little backpack to be worn by the child which has a handle on top. Might be good until your child is tall enough so that you can hold her by the hands comfortably. Ultimately you will have to teach her some safety rules, such as always hold hands near roads etc, and teach her to stop when you yell stop.

From what I know, these straps are not intended to stop the baby from falling - though as you say, it may help - but more to "not-loose-them" in a crowd while shopping. I know that most people would buy one when having to attend to several babies. I still don't have one, but now that she's beginning to want to walk on her own not holding my hand, and escaping me by running away, I think I just might! :-D

Falling is ok and normal for babies so long as they dont fall on something dangerous.

What did parents do before there were harnesses and restraints?

If you want to go back that far, then yes, I find putting kids on a leash barbaric.
