x ray for Toddler

ORIGINAL POST

Just coming back from the doc with my 14 mths old boy. He has been coughing for the past 3 weeks. Saw a paediatric specialized in respiratory problems and he said that a xray of the lungs needs to be done. I'm shocked and told him that I need to think about it first. Anybody has any experience with xray's for such young kids.

My baby is only 3 months and had a chest xray because he has a chest infection, its absolutely safe. Go ahead with it as the Dr and yourself want to know the condition of your sons lungs and to have to appropriate treatment. You dont want it getting any worse. A chest xray is quite routine.

Your doctor should balance the effects of the chest infection, and to what extend a CXR would assist his/her treatment, and the disadvantage of a CXR. The dose for a CXR is comparatively low, and if indeed indicated, dose exposure for an occasional cxr (with lead protection of the pelvic area) is harmless, even at such young age.

Tks. Matilda Heatlh Care Centre. Funny enough after three weeks of continous coughing at night, he didn't cough at all last night as if he knows that the xray lies ahead today...
