Native English tutors can't get paid cash

Is it just my company or is it common to not allow Expats working here to earn extra income by tutoring or whatever? (sorry, I'm from the real part of the US where no one only has a single source of income!)

Would it be worth a potential student's while to offer to exchange nicer meals, theatre tickets, or other 'stuff' out of my regular budget instead of cash for tutoring services?

Actually there's a bit more to it than that. Your employment visa is employer-specific and it's illegal to carry out paid work for anyone else.

A lot of contracts specify that you can't work elsewhere - it's not always a visa issue. Mine has this clause, for example.
