friend is coming to hk for 1st time. he has got a employment visa. does he queue at the "Visitors" queue at the airport immigration control, or the one marked "Resident"?

i remember the 1st time i came, i queued at the visitor line even though i had the employment visa. after that, I kept thinking whether I had wasted time queueing at the super long queue when i could have used the other shorter queue counter.

"Resident" refers to persons with a valid HK ID card. Your friend is a visitor till he gets an HK ID card. Therefore he will have to queue until then.

the 2nd time i come in, i queue at the "residents" queue. All the pple in the queue dun have a HKID card. they only have a entry visa on their passports. for HKID card holders, there is a 3rd counter that is called "HKID holders".

fairlady05,

I recall that there are basically 5 types of counter:

-visitors

-HK residents

-HK permanent ID card holders

-diplomats

-airport/airline staff

Now permanent ID card holders can use automatic barrier as well.

Anyone else care to comment?

throbbing, that looks more or less right. There is one for APEC travelpass holders as well.

But op, to your question, I think the right answer is through 'visitors' queue - though its important to tell the official that he/she has a work visa. Only then will they use the 'employment permitted' chop and change the time for deparute to 1 yr later.

You have to be in possession of an ID card of some kind to use the Resident and Perm. resident channels. I had a visa when I arrived, but no ID- they sent me over to visitors.

The first time I entered HK - with my employment visa and of course no HK ID card - I was told by the immigration agent that I should use the resident lane as I was in possession of a visa, even though I did not have the ID card yet. I left HK shortly thereafter for a few days and when I reentered - again with no HK ID card - I used the resident lane and had no problems. So it seems it depends on the agent you get.

Licorice, u have been very lucky. the first time i entered hk, i was told by the "usher" there to go to the visitors queue after i showed him my visa. and was stuck there for 30mins, even though i had a visa.

your visa becomes effective from the date you enter the country. so if you have a one year visa and you enter the country on the 9th of septermber 2006, you visa will be valid until the 9th of september 2007. when i first entered i went through the visitors queue and the guy told me from then on i could go through the residents queue.
