Storing Breast Milk - using ice cube trays - advice

ORIGINAL POST

Hi,

To save wasting my precious BM I want to store it using ice cube trays so that I can just use what I need (when preparing solid food).

I know that I will have to sterilise the ice cube tray and then store in the freezer with the lid on until frozen - however, what plastic freezer bags are safe to then store the cubes?

I am worried about contamination from plastic and want to make sure that I use the right kind so I dont risk the milk.

Grateful for your advice...

Hi

I use the Hefty Freezer bags, put cubes in, take the air out (not graceful that part!), and double bag them,

In my opinion, because the cubes are already made and frozen, it is less of a concern about contamination as they are already made and frozen. Of course, I could be completely wrong! Most of the websites and books I have seen discussing the 'milk and food cube' methods seem to use this storage process.

If it is really terrible for baby, I have been poisoning my baby for months!

If you are really concerned about plastic, use the milk storage bags, specifically designed for storing breast milk and store is small amounts so it is easy to use what you need when - 50 and 20 ml.

If you still want to use cubes, you could put the milk cubes in glass containers, but then you will have to deal with 'air' resulting in more freezer burn. In addition, you will need a HUGE freezer, the bags are more space efficient... (you'll see what I mean when you have breast milk cubes, food cubes, etc.. taking up 50% of your freezer or more!)

This is a tray with individual lids. I think it would be easier and safer to steralize this and then put it in a plastic bag.

I use the food cubes for some storage too - but you would need about 50 I think to keep one week's supply. I have 6 of these and use them as storage and feeding containers - I actually 'defrost' the food/milk cubes in these the night before (in fridge) and they are all ready to go in the morning.

Great product as they fit in our square bottle/food warmer. Bought a bag of 6 at Bumps2Babes.

I bought mine at Citysuper, then found them cheaper in the dollar store in 'the lanes' (you know with handbags, etc... across from old Lane Crawford).

It was a while ago...

But they are white, single row, about 7 or 8 cubes.

With an opaque lid.
