Park Island used to have fireworks right after mid-night on 31/12. I was there the year before last. Not sure if they had it last year. It's of a much smaller scale than the CNY harbour one, but very "warm". Everybody crowded along the coast, and the fireworks were so close to your face. I enjoyed it very much.

We spent 2006 new year's eve here in HK and was disappointed that there were no fireworks...

Fireworks at CNY is to ensure good fortune for the coming year and companies are willing to sponsor them. Why would a company want to sponsor fireworks for 31/12 when it's not for good fortune but really for the tourists? I'm sure Chinese people are similarly disappointed when they travel abroad.

The ones on National Day are sponsored by a company wishing to show its "patriotism".

Perhaps if someone works for a big international company they can pursuade the company to sponsor fireworks for 31/12... ?
