I am living in the outlying islands. Do you live in a block of flats or a low-rise building?

I felt it too! We live in Tai Po, in a block of flats tiered up a hillside. Very wierd - I didn't know that they had earthquakes here.

The HK Observatory has a press release saying that they recorded it and will release more info when they analyse their data.

FYI the last one (before today) was in 1994 & the last before that around 1918? Anyways in THEORY HK could have bigger earthquakes & I understand the Govt is looking into the design criteria however I am not at all worried by it personally unlike when I was in Japan...

The link from 'cara' covers recent events (including this evening) whereas the link from 'throbbing' is clearly out of date.

TC,
the first link from Cara even covers Indonesian & Vanauatu earthquakes whilst the second I posted covers earthquakes felt in HK - it may not cover today but it certainly covers 1874 to 1995 maybe even later its not 100% clear & what it demonstrates is biggish earthquakes (intensity 5 or above) in HK are rare.

Accept that, but if anyone wants to read about TODAY's quake (the main subject of this thread) then...

TC,
True, very true but it seems from some of the posts that some people (maybe those new to HK?) are slightly concerned & they should not be once they see the facts/records. Incidentally RTHK web is a useful site for up-to-date news.

It is record of earthquakes actually (if in some cases barely) felt in Hong Kong since 1979. Makes the same point as above: Eartquakes really not worth worrying about in Hong Kong.

As cara pointed out previously, this link http://www.hko.gov.hk/gts/equake/neqpress_e.htm from the Hong Kong Observatory site, lists all the Press Releases on earthquakes. Interestingly, it lists more than 30 earthquakes stretching from Indonesia and Papua, right through the Philipines, Hong Kong and Japan (14 as a matter of fact, over the past 2 weeks!). Some registered magnitudes of 5.5 and 6.6 on the Richter Scale (which is considered a 'severe' earthquake).
