I am leaving soon for Bejing. we will be staying in Bejing for 1 week and thought we'd go to Shanghai for a few days then on to Hong kong for a few days. We have 2 weeks in total.

I read on another site that we might be able to find former foreign exchange students (english speaking) and hire them to show us around.

Should Inter china flights be booked from the U.S?

This trip is a dream come true for me. I know it's too short but hopefully we can come again.

Any help with my itinerary would be grately appreciated.

I wouldn't spend too much time in Shanghai, and I think for a trip as short as yours you can do three or four days in Beijing (although allow a bit of down time for rest somewhere). The part of Shanghai that a tourist will see is very over-developed, crowded, with a lot of beggars ad scam artists speaking English and targeting tourists. (Don't talk to them!) If you go there, see the Shanghai museum, but I personally would skip it and go on the overnight train to Xi'an (Terra Cotta warriors, Mosque, Muslim quarter, museum, etc), then fly to a small(er) place like Lijiang or Dali, or even Kunming or Chengdu, then Hong Kong. Bring your pocket translator and a Lonely Planet you won't find an English guidebook here. If you want to book from inside China, do it at the airport or you can use elong.net or ctrip.com inside China (if they service the cities you are in, tickets are personally delivered to your hotel).

Hullo! As it is, I've just logged back on this site after a long period of absence (a couple of months). I'd be pleased to show you around in Shanghai; I speak both English and Mandarin at a native level so communication and getting around won't be a problem! :) I'm in my last year of study (bachelor's degree) at Shanghai Conservatory of Music and have travelled extensively throughout China.

If you need help with plane tickets, let me know and I'll arrange for you to pick up and pay for the tickets when you arrive in Beijing, no problem at all.

What are your sightseeing interests/preferences? That might give me a better idea of what to suggest for your itinerary.

Emailing me directly at ellyse99@yahoo.com might be better as I don't check this site as regularly. Thanks! :)
