Sorry if it sounds bad, but it also SMELLS bad!!
We accidently left a frozen chicken to rot for a week in a freezer when the electricity had been cut. Needless to say, the result is dreadful!
And the smell really persitent, despite thorough washing with bleach, dettol, etc...
Anyone with useful tips to avoid throwing the whole freezer away?

Try used tea bags or used tea. It works for my fridge.

Thank you all!
I'll try everything!
Tiger, I will get straight to my dictionary for the "cutting paste" and the "stench", I don't know these words/things, hee hee!!
Your lab experince sounds even worse than our chicken one, I sympathise! ;))....

try straight vanilla essence to wipe down the freezer and then get a whole packet of baking powder (eg arm&hammer) and put in a wide shallow bowl and leave in the freezer with the door shut - the baking absorbs the smells (I use this in my fridge)

I would scrub using one of those yellow and green sponges (use the green side) with something like cif- a thick paste cleaner usually used for bathrooms....then try the lemon cut in halves and rub it all over the fridge...if you squeeze out the lemon juice and put it in a spray bottle you can spray it into all the small cracks around the seal etc...
good luck.

Sometimes there's also a drip pan underneath the freezer, especially if it's the self-defrosting variety. One time I found this to be the source of a bad odor.

update: i have started with the baking powder strategy option (simply because it's the first thing that i came across in th shop), and i must say it seems to be working wonders!
I hope it will be sufficient!

Where can I buy a freezer (only freezer not refrigerator with tiny freezer) in Hong Kong?

soda bicarbonate powder in a bowl or balsamic vinegar in a bowl. Both great for absorbing odours.
I thought i'd ahve to throw a fridge out - it was in the house that we moved into - had the most awful stench.
But once the inside was cleaned with soap - it was wiped down with balsamic vinegar -any cheapier kind will do -and then we put a small bowl of vinegar inside and left it there - it really worked wonders.
