I recently changed my last name on my passport, and now need to add a new hkg visa to it showing my new name.
I have'nt done so yet.
If I had to travel sometime soon, is it possible to take my old and new passport and show them that although my name has changed, my Visa is clearly still valid?
Or, can I just wait until I get back to hkg to deal with this within a certain period of time?
Could'nt find any info on the immigration site, so I figured I'd ask here before heading all the way over from Sai Kung. Thks!

Yes, but take a photo copy of your proof of name change {ie marriage certificate or name change certificate etc}
You need to get your ID card changed to your new name too.

Getting the ID card changed is a very easy (and quick) process. The passport change is not so easy and not so quick, the amount of difference depending on your nationality.

Already did my I.D.
TC, are you saying that changing my name on my Visa & having it put in my new passport is not easy?
How long would this take?
I'm a U.S citizen here with my husband for work.

From what I understand, your old passport is cancelled and is no longer a valid travel document - unless you asked for the page with the visa on not to be cancelled. Therefore you do not have a valid visa in your valid travel document. Get to ImmD as soon as you can and transfer it to your new one.

Thks Claire, will do.
Does anyone know if this can be done the same day I request it, or will it take days of waiting?

Della,
have they cut off the corner on which the Visa is stamped? if not it is still valid. If not the ID will give you a bridging visa until the new one is ready. They are very helpful in these situations.

Hi Delia,
For what it's worth, this is my own first hand experience with the same issue:
I travel on an Australian passport.
I changed to my married name and was issued a new passport in my new name.
My old passport was cancelled and the corners and bar code cut off of it. My HK visa was not altered in any way in my old passport.
As I was travelling frequently for my work, it took me a little time to get the opportunity to go into immigration office and transfer it.
In the meantime, I presented my new and old passport at immigration when entering and exiting the country. I had a photocopy of my marriage certificate if needed.
It was never a problem and after the first stamp was made in my new passport, it was rarely questioned.
I also had no problems when I did go into the immigration office and have a new visa issued in my new name and passport.
I know this doesn't apply to you, but I also had a 12 month China visa, which was not able to be transfered in my old passport, and contined to use both passports there for 8 months until it expired, making many trips without problem.
You can double check that the same conditions will apply to you by emailing them to be on the safe side. I have found that they answer very promptly.
