Hi, Its my baby's first birthday and I have no experience in parties. Can someone tell how big the cake should be. There would be approx. 40 adults and 10 children. Thanks

Are you baking the cake?

Or are you ordering/catering?

If the later, then they company should be able to advise you.

I would think the common Fresh Fruit cake is safest. The babies actually can eat the sponge cake part if mommies are worried about the fresh fruit causing allergies and stuff. Just make sure no nuts.

you need to find out if any wheat or egg allergies - this is a new age where even cake can cause problems.

I would just bake some cupcakes (I have a very easy recipe if you want) and if necessary, decorate with some freshly whipped cream and sprinkles (provided no dairy allergies either.) complicated, isn't it?

All kids and adults love chocolate cake.As for the size, irrespective of the kids finishing their piece, you have to give them the usual size. I would suggest a 4lb cake. You could ask the person making the cake, what size would she recommend. Also I would suggest a flatter cake than a thicker one.

What about one small cake for birthday baby - to stick her face in and get messy.

And another cake for the children, that has baby friendly ingredients, as HKCC suggested.

And an 'adult' cake for the adults that can have all the 'bad stuff' we try to keep from our children!

Sounds hard, but it is also hard to make one cake to feed 50 people!

oh - sprinkles were for if there were older kids. sorry. Mine didn't have any cake at her first either. NO smearing on the face. She had her first taste of cake on her second birthday. (LOVED IT.)

But a lot of people invite kids older than a one year old to a party to celebrate. I like the cupcakes because you don't have to cut, each older/child or adult can have a taste and you can make them at home pretty easily. and if you make a really bland cake with not a lot of seasoning, you could always allow babies to have a taste if their parents so desire.

Not so sure everyone loves chocolate cake. My son (4 Years) won't touch anything with cocoa in it - chocolates, cakes, chocolate chip cookies - nothing. My mom is the same.
