Stopping BF - when do periods return?

I have just finished breastfeeding (bf for 7 months). Just wondering when on average your period should return?

Did you go back to your pre-preg cycle or did it take a while to get back on track?

Grateful for your experience sharing...

You should probably get your period fairly quickly now that you no longer bf. Two to three months or sooner. Any longer than that probably would warrant a visit ot your doctor just to make sure everything is okay. Remember, no unprotected sex now unless you want another child right away. Don't assume that you can't get pregnant until after you have had a period. You will ovulate in the weeks prior to your first period and I know more than one mother of two who got caught this way.

It is likely that even though you may go back to having regular periods from the start the will probably be a bit different than your pre-preg cycle. Everyone is a bit different.

Mine came back about 3 months after giving birth while I was still breast feeding full time... But I think this is unusual.

Yeah. I think it's different with everyone. I got mine after around 5 months and I was bf full time too.

Hi. I got my period back 2 mos after I stopped BF, but I think most women get it sooner. It took 2-3 cycles for it to go back to normal.

Congratulations on breastfeeding your baby for 7 months.

There is great variation between women and some women's periods return as soon as they reduce the frequency of the breastfeeds. However, it usually takes between one and three months for a woman to begin to ovulate and for her cycle to return to normal after discontinuing breastfeeding. It is not, however, unusual for some women to take longer to resume a regular cycle.

Ovulation can occur at any time and pregnancy can occur even before a woman has had a first period.

If your periods have not returned after six months it would be worth arranging to see your GP to have a blood test to check your hormone levels.
