I have recently introduced tofu to my 7 mo. Up to now I have only mixed it with banana. What else would you recommend?

plain. babies don't have preconceived notions about what is "good" or not, like we do. I sometimes like it plain, myself, or like they serve it in the Chinese restaurants with a little green onion and soy sauce stuff! Just the soy sauce is a bit heavy on salt for a baby and don't think you'd want to give him the green onions until he's been vaccinated against Hepatitis A.

I cut the tofu into cubes and roll it into wheatgerm. My baby LOVES it. Its also a good finger food. I got the idea off this website:

I mix tofu with avocado, as well as any other veggies.
Basically, his 'lunch' has tofu in it every day.
And egg yolk M - W - F.
Ideally it is Avocado, Tofu, Egg Yolk, Yogurt.
But when we don't have avocado it is whatever veggies we are serving plus thte tofu.
We buy the Silk Tofu from ParkNShop, and it blends really easily and is super cheap.
We have a plastic tub with a lid in the fridge, and we cut the tofu into 'meal size' amounts, and soak in cold water, changing the water every day. So at meal time we just take out a 'cube' and pop it in with the other food to blend.
Great healthy food for babies!

I introduced my son to plain tofu at about 8 mos, and he still loves it at 2 1/2. He also loves it mixed with his scrambled eggs (not sure your baby is old enough for the eggs) and in soup.

I mix it in congee with salmon. Sometimes I cut them into cubes, put minced pork on top, then steam for 8-10 minutes (depending on quantity).
Word of caution, my Chinese MIL said not to eat tofu and spinach together in the same meal. Apparently it's toxic. Same as the north and south almonds that they cook in soup, both look alike and have to be mixed otherwise it is toxic. I don't know how true but better safe than sorry ;-)

How long does it stay fresh in the fridge for? I have opened it on Sat and kept it in org container in the liquid it came in and then in a ziplock bag...

Am I hearing recommendations of egg and salmon for a six month old baby?!! Be cautious with introducing protein foods at younger than one year! Protein foods are the ones that cause allergies, and the reason for the age limitations is that the baby's immune system is young and therefore more prone to formation of allergies. Your baby might not have that susceptibility and so may be fine, but generally better safe than sorry. I generally rinse the tofu daily with fresh water and use it pretty fast. I've never had a problem with tofu, but I'm told you have to be very careful where you buy it from.

MayC - I have a packed of morinu soft tofu in my fridge and I just saw it has a recipe for a spinach dip on it - so guessing maybe it's one of those things people say about spinach and tofu....
I never know what to do with tofu - I fry up the sausage kind with veggies and I add the soft kind to sauces, caseroles etc - my 9 month old eats both kinds quite happily.
Meiguoren are you suggesting no protein foods should be introduced before a year old - I thought it was about 8-9 months usually and have been feeding mine egg, cheese, tofu, beans and then any meat or fish in puree jars (I'm veggie so hubby gives her them) - she seems fine but now you have me a little concerned!

asking - you need to change with fresh cold water every day, and it will last 4-5 days.

cook in vege stock, chicken stock, or fish stock (dried fish flakes and small dry fish) like japanese do. you can add some salt if you want. i normally put tofu in miso soup, so i plan to use the c*cked tofu in the stock bfre mixing miso for my baby. you dont have to cook especially for the baby...you can have the souo, too.

Re cooking - In Ruth Yarrons Super baby food book she says you dont have to cook tofu as its cooked already. Is this true?
Ive looked in Parknshop and all the tofu packets are in Cantonese so Im not sure. I bought the soft tofu and have been giving it mixed with banana or yoghurt and now I am worried that I should have cooked it first.....!

You do not NEED to cook tofu - but for an adult it might taste better that way.
Our baby has had tofu almost every day for months - the ParkNShop soft tofu, and is super healthy.

tofu doesn't need to be cooked - the silken kind is especially tasty eaten raw. I just defrost veggie cubes and mix a chunk of tofu into it for my daughters lunch. Not fussy at all.

Hi crj, I'm not up to date on specific schedule, I was thinking generally a year, but wouldn't disagree with whatever doc or nutritionists were to say. I'm just sensitive about the general topic b/c I'm the one in a zillion who followed all the recommendations and still got the highly allergic child.

Meiguoren, I've been looking and most current texts seem to say 8-9 months and my LO is doing fine - doesn't seem to have had any food sensitivities. I guess sometimes it's just bad luck so undertandably you'd be concerned having been through that. It's a good reminder to keep my eyes open with what's going on with mine though...
any recommendations on where to get good tofu in GZ? I usually get at Metro where it's vacuum sealed, or in HK.

most texts say 8-9 months but of course if there is a family history, it will be safer to wait longer.
we did chicken and yoghurt at 7 months and cheese (just mild cheddar) from 7.5 months. i always wait for a few days (min. 2) when i introduce new stuff.
we tried beef on weekend but bub fell ill with gastric flu. was thinking of trying some cod in his congee this weekend but think i'll wait for him to completely recover.
but seafood like prawns, definitely past 1 year. and probably no eggs until he is pretty old as hubby had a reaction to them as a child.
back to tofu: wanted to do it at 7 months but read somewhere not until 8 so didn't do it. will want to try some. so for the last time, it is ok to serve without cooking? the ones i want to buy are vacuum sealed in a plastic tub...they say can be served cold but always thought we had to at least steam it first?

hi,
since we are on the topic of tofu...
can i ask if it's ok to freeze cooked tofu? e.g. if i have a recipe that uses tofu, can i freeze the food in individual portions to feed my baby later in the week or is the tofu going to be all nasty and rubbery?

A lot of foods can be introduced to a baby during weaning. Usually rice water, pureed veg, fruit and then meat will be introduced stepwisely. Make sure to introduce one food at a time for trial and the texture must be smooth and without any particles.
