We are preparing to bring bubs on his first beach holiday -- so excited! Will obviously keep a sunhat and UV suit on and keep him out of the hottest sun, but can anybody let me know what is the best brand of sunscreen for young babies? Thanks!

I had this issue with my extemely fair son. Dr said not to use anything until at least 6 months, but then he got sunburnt even being in the shade on holiday. The sun came through the sun umbrella. So I started to use Neutrogena face sunscreen. Goes on dry with no grease and did not have any PABA or other harmful ingredients.
Good luck

I found in HK, the question to ask is what can you actually find!
Have a great holiday, baby will love it!

Yikes Crj, really? I'm really looking forward to our hols but am quite concerned about our very fair son -- I don't know which worries me more: so much product on his baby skin (we don't even use soap in the bath yet!) or the UV rays. Simplythebest, are the sunscreens you recommended suitable for babies as young as mine? and Scuba chick, is the Neutrogena sunscreen for kids or adults? Thanks as always ladies...

I just mean, buy whatever you find that says it is for babies - as the choices are not so varied.
We bought some overseas - Banana Boat waterproof for babies and J&J. The waterproof does mean we need a small amount of soap to get it off him in the bath!
You could drive yourself crazy looking for a certain 'brand' - I say just get what you can find!
Doubibou has some on their website:

It doesn't say ages, but you could write to Sophie to ask.
Most of the ones I see say 6 months + BUT a bit of sun screen for a few days is MUCH BETTER than a sun burn with the short and long term consequences.

Mmm... that's what I was worried about -- most children's sunscreens I have looked at says 6 months up. The Badger's Balm on the Doubidou website says it is suitable for all ages so maybe that one is a winner. Does any one have any experience with this product?

I used Avene's sunscreen before for my baby girl under 6 months. It was fine.
Best variety of choices is to go to Eugene CLub. They have SO many choices for babies. All of them work well. I have most of them.

My very fair babe did get burned at age 6 months even with hat, umbrella, and some sunscreen etc. It was awful! We later figured it must have been from sun reflected off the sand, in future limited outings to later in day when sun was not so intense. My three have not universally enjoyed the beach -- the third one detested the water and sand so badly that she sat on a beach towel or stayed in the (rental) house until she was about 4 y/o.

It's true. My baby girl hated the sand and beach..... not until now... she's 3 years old now. It was hard to take care of her too..... too much to carry to the beach, and nowhere to place the baby down and if the beach is windy, it's even worse, the sand kept flying into our faces.... I think beach holiday sounds and imagines to be fun (not to spoil your mood)... but it's definitely not very practical in reality.
We went to Gold Coast, Australia when baby was 18 months, and it was STILL hard.
I think they have to be walking and running and being able to play on their own for the beach to be fun.

we use avent because it's only spf 15. not to sound bonkers, i know we want to protect their skin but i was equally concerned that the really high spf found in most of the baby sunblock would do more harm than good. most of the ones i saw were at least spf 35.
so what i do is we swim when it's really not sunny and we have hat, swim shirt and i apply the avent sunblock. so far so good.

California Baby is a non-chemical sunscreen, no fragrance and water resistant for 80 minutes.

Katetam -- haha thanks for the down to earth picture of beach travel with a baby! I suspect we will be by the pool more than on a beach and even then, I can't imagine my little one will be in the water for more than 10 minutes at a time.
I was actually looking at the California Baby range at Healthquest yesterday but it doesn't specify an age range. Anyone tried this on their babies? Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

Mayafox,
Katetam isn't too far wrong with the baby / beach / sand thing. Took our son to the beach the other day....he ate sand, spat it out, and then proceeded to spend the rest of the time sulking (cos he didn't like to walk on the sand 'cos it felt weird) or walking round trying to take other kids' toys from them! His own weren't good enough!! I think a private villa with pool is the way forward....
As for sunscreen, my son is extremely pale (hold him up to the light and you'd see through him!) so we really don't let him have too long in the sun. We use a hat, Aussie Cancer Foundation Spf 30, and only go out late afternoon for swims. To be honest, I would much rather have the sunscreen (any sunscreen if it came ot that) on my baby to stop him burning than have him get burnt!
He's a year next week and we've used the same stuff since 3 months old - he seems fine on it and his skin is still baby smooth and more importantly, not burnt.
