any suggestions on how i should do my new zealand backpack next year - too many feedback on nz being the most easy backpack country. my plan is to be there in april - i know jan-mar is a better summer time - but work doesn't allow. anyway - objective is to do as many adventure sports as possible in both north and south islands - at this point no concrete plan to start from which island - probably able to get 2.5 weeks away from work. what do you guys think?

If you want adventure sports head straight to Queenstown on the south island, full of like minded backpackers too so you will make loads of friends,if you are on your own I'd start off there.

Join a Kiwi Experience Tour. NZ is not great for public transport and hitchiking is not safe -don't do it. Don't want to scare you but as clean and green as NZ is you need to be very careful, sadly our history is littered with backpacker tragedies and the isolation and remoteness of the country side is so beautiful but also very attractive for too many nutters. The other option is to hire a car or campervan which will give you great freedom but will lack some of the social interaction unless you stay at backpacker hostels.

really? i guess is jus so cos' the percentage of backpackers are higher in nz and so eventually you get more nasty stories..i guess tragedies happen everywhere on planet earth..but generally i believe nz should be a very easy to travel country. i don't think i will do car rental cos' is not cost efficient since i'll probably be travelling alone or with another friend. and yah backpacker hostel. thanx btw.
in fact, im not as worried about accomodation or anything else than to plan such that i can do most, if not all the adventure sports..
