Heart Rate Monitor

ORIGINAL POST

I am thinking of buying one for my husband for Christmas. He runs 3/4 times a week, not in training for anything specific just to maximise his running for fitness. Can anybody recommend a brand/model that would be suitable (and where to buy)?

Thanks

Yeah, I ahve a Polar, they work well. You don't need the expensive models - the basic one has plenty of functionality.

I don't like the idea of a chest strap and you can buy a heart rate monitor that uses an earpiece. Methinks this is better for gym training so you can put the display unit next to you while you go through routine.

But has anyone seen such a machine in Hong Kong? Seen plenty of Polar and other HRM watches, but no other designs. Can anyone suggest the best fitness/medical shops to try?

Thanks.

I've never seen a HRM that doesn't use a chest strap. You may need to order it on-line.

Yes, I have seen them on-line only and they look good. Will try hunting a few more days in Hong Kong (Johnson Road and Wanchai area?) and if no luck will resort (again) to online purchase.

Thanks.

Thanks. Finished up buying the second most cheap version today! Given up trying to find a separate unit, so will give the chest strap and watch a go but looks fine so far.

Dennyboy, an update.

Quite pleased I bought the Polar HRM watch. Works very well, and was especially pleased when I found the Life Fitness treadmill picking up the signal from the chest strap too. A nice surprise.

As a-man said above, you only need a cheap one. More than enough functionality. Just keep a notebook handy for writing down results of each session. I also use a pocket PC with the Videone MySporttraining application which is great for tracking everything.

And chest strap works fine. Not sure why I was thinking against the flow here! Good reasons why the watch HRM is so popular. ;}

Thanks guys.

downside of polars, the batteries run out very quickly (as in every 3 months) if you use them 3-5 times a week...and it takes the Polar guys 2 wks to replace the battery.
