I got my hair coloured black for the first time. I got it done at a proper reputable place, paid big bucks. My problem is that every time I wash my hair, the colour bleeds, the water turns black. And till my hair is dry, it keeps staining my shirt. The shampoo I use is the one especially to be used for coloured hair. Is this common? I am quite put off with getting my hair coloured, quite a hassle.. with the staining and all.

To keep it simple, yes it can happen. It will depend on the brand of color used, the colour you covered and the amount of colour put on your hair. There is often excess colour when dark colours are used which washes off during the first one or two shampoos but it should not continue to bleed out every time you shampoo after that. Of course the colour will fade but should stop bleeding after the first couple of washes. Make sure you rinse your hair very well and give it a good towel dry before putting on any light coloured clothes before the first couple of washes.

well for my experience to add to d-man's comment, I had my hair blue black a clouple of times and there the colour bleeding is a little longer because the blue pigments are very small and fall out every time you wash it and together with the excess colour it can look worse than it is :)
but I would also suggest to rinse it very well and use a good conditioner to close the cuticle so the colour is not fading too fast :)
but usually after two weeks it should stop! just watch it.
