I am sitting here in the UK trying to sort out our Move to HK at the end of December. What kind of weather are we going to find in the first few months? We are wearing our winter coats over here. I have heard mixed reports on what to expect in HK in the winter. One person told me it was 21 degrees and they were sitting on the beach on Christmas Day. Then I have seen threads on this website with remarks about hats and scarves. I am confused..
Any help you can give me as to what I should pack for the children and of course us adults for our initial months would be much appreciated.

By now we are usually at least comfortable wearing a suit jacket to work, but we've just experienced our warmest October on record and the jacket (after one outing) has been consigned back to the closet. The temperature is dropping (now around the 23-25C mark) and should drop quite a bit further as we move into December. Around Christmas and into January you could usually expect the temperature to be around 10-15C, but once into February there'll be a steady climb back up the discomfort scale. You can get current and historical weather data from the following site:

Regardless of the weather, you'll need a coat for the office/bus/shopping malls!!!!
To say it's not heated like in other countries is misleading. In fact you'll find offices running air-conditioners full blast even when it's 15 degrees outside.
And what's this about "dry winds"? Humidity has been hovering around 85% (it's usually about 60 in October/November, which is bone dry by HK standards), so whatever you wear, wear something cotton inside.

Coming from the UK 10 years ago i'll give you my rundown.
Today between 19-23 and i've been fine in trousers and long T. My parents were over last christmas and they were in summer clothes.
Doesn't tend to get 'coat and hat' weather until Chinese New Year.
Coming from the UK i'll think you'll initially be fine in long T's and trousers and wait until end of Jan/Feb for the cold days.

Thank you all. It is a little clearer now. I best get back to the sorting out and packing.

We arrived with 2 small kids in toe in Feb. I would recommend packing clothes for the kids that you can layer - long sleeved t shirts, light jumpers/track suit tops and 1 waterproof jacket each. Long pants but nothing too heavy.
Now my kids are mainly in long sleeved shirts and tracksuit type pants - with a jumper or light jacket at night/early in morning. In the middle of the day it can still be shorts and tshirt weather when the sun is out - but less so in the last week. The rain and wind are more of a factor than the temperature (no biting cold like England). The temperature also varies where you are - often warmer in the city because not so windy. The above posts are right about the air con - it is now colder in buildings than it is outside - you might need a jumper to shop!
What the locals think is cold, would probably be a nice summers day in the UK!

you would think it is the north pole with what somepeople wear here. Last year I did buy a heater and used it about 5-10 times when it was really chilly in December. Went home and Xmas and bought back a coat and gloves but by the time I got back in mid-Jan they were no longer needed but I did wear winter clothes to the office from beginning Dec - mid Feb because it was colder inside than out.

There's usually one cooler snap in Nov, (this last week it got down to 18 one night), christmas is normally lovely and sunny around 22-24 during the day, we've had christmas dinner sitting outside, and days either side on the beach. One xmas it was about 15. Beginning of Jan is usually nice and turns horrible for CNY. Very humid and damp during Feb and Mar. It usually averages around 14-16 in the winter but can get down to 3-4 at night especially out of the city. And its often colder indoors than out.
