We are wanting to buy a digital slr camera. It will be used for family pics, travel pics and a small amount for business product pics also. Not fussed on brand, looking for reliability, robust, sharp image, good software.

You can't go wrong with Nikon or Canon. But for your usage, why spend the money on a DSLR? It doesn't sound like you need something that sophisticated.

thanks for feedback. Want the options that come with SLR, point of focus etc. Digital point and shoot are great however the image is never as sharp and detail can be lost. Less options to be creative.
I had a nikon 501s slr would like similar functionality.

If you already have some lenses for Nikon SLR, you will almost certainly be able to use these with a Nikon dSLR.
I have a Nikon D70s and I love it. The D40 and D50 are slightly down in specs from the D870s, and the D80 higher spec. One factor that you may consider if you're doing any amount of product photography is whether you will want to use a remote shutter release. The D40 and D50 only support a wireless remote, which apparently doesn't work very well.

Hey I really want an entry level DSLR too, mostly for available light portrait taking - i.e. wide open aperture with a fast lens. I've got great Minolta F1.2 50mm and F2.0 100mm lenses, but I think Minolta is out of the camera business now, right? AFAIK, Sony bought the Konica Minolta Camera division and my guess is they used Minolta DLSR tech to create the Alpha. But the Alpha wouldn't be compatible with Minolta lenses...
So...
I guess what I need is the cheapest Canon or Nikon with aperture priority or manual setting and the cheapest fast (F2.0 or better, preferably 1.7 or better) portrait lens I can get.
Any suggestions?

Well, Poor man, for potrait and budgetary thoughts, I guess NIKON D-50 or even D-40 but if you are going for movements and sports shots, Canon will be the choice for budgetary thoughts,

Well I've decided to get the Sony, for three reasons...
1. I can use my Minolta Lenses.
2. GREAT Image Stabilization (said to drop 3.5 f-stops).
3. Very reasonable price.
Using my F1.2 lens with Sony's IS, I will be able to take decent ISO400 quality shots in near darkness. Great for those live music performances, as well as portraits across the harbor.
I can't wait to get it. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait until after xmas. Spent my budget already this month.

Has anybody purchased the Pentax K10 here in HK yet? If so, where from and how much did you end up paying?
thanks

I just bought the Sony Alpha 100 and I absolutely love it. Feels at least as good as my Minolta D700i. Haven't had the chance to retrieve my lenses from storage yet (funny how quickly digital photography made shooting with film -- and paying for film and processing -- an unhappy experience) but I plan on picking them up today.
Nevertheless, I got the 2 lens kit, as it was a really great deal ($7390 at Broadway) when compared to the body only package.
