Yesterday we went to the Village People/Gloria Gaynor/Kool & the Gang concert but the last one never showed up ! Instead was 1 hour of Village People, 10 mns of Gaynor's band and 1 hour of Gloria Gaynor. This is weird and disappointing as Kool has the best music and the most numbers of hit amongst the 3 bands !
Despite this, I still wonder when HK Exhibition or the promotors will understand that Western concerts do not need any seats at the front !!! What a weird idea from the HKCEC manager to ask everyone to seat back in the middle of the show. That was obvious that 5 mns later the whole thousands of persons would go back to the front and it is normal !!! We are not listening at Maria Carey or Celine Dion or Faye Wong

Same here. We should have all stayed and demanded to see K & the Gang. I'm about to call them to ask for a refund. They probably meant the 2 K & the Gang Songs played by Gloria's band... Rip Off. But I did enjoy it. The construction worker was hilarious.

Actually I kind of like Gaynor. She put a great atmosphere. Village indeed is bit trash disco as they said !
For the refund, I doubt it as well but there should be an apologie at least

I suspect K&G was cancelled in view of the poor attendance. The promoter probably couldn't afford to pay another band...

Went primarily to see Kool and the Gang. Thought GG still had it in her. VP were really struggling. Makes me wonder why they should still be doing such tours! Fun overall though.
Was very disappointed not to see K&TG. Have already contacted the promoter. No explanation. no apology. There has to be some misrepresentation here?
Whilst writing - have been to a few concerts here over the years and for a world class city, have still have not been to a venue that can really accommodate such performers. Am not talking in terms of space for the audience but what about acoustics, lighting, aptmosphere, etc. Further, absolutely respect ordinances to maintain and ensure public safety but most people go to concerts to party, dance and lose themselves in the music. There seems to be over concern at times which puts a real dampner on the event.
Appreciate the Promoter was following instructions, asking everybody to go back to their seats but it killed any aptmosphere built up at that point, and gmbl is so right, it was obvious what was going to happen next....

HK as a concert venue is dying unfortunately. After the high profile cancellations this year (robbie and mariah, not Kool and his gang). There just isn't an audience here. HK stadium is the only suitable venue for mega bands - but it can't be used for music in case it interferes with the noise coming from the surrounding flats. Medium sized bands won't come as it won't be economical. Therefore, we are left to travel to Japan or Thailand or further afield to see our favourite bands.

Well, my friends and I had a thoroughly enjoyable time and thought it was money well spent. Disappointed that Kool & the Gang didn't turn up and would like an explanation ... realise there's no chance of getting any money back! Village people were just what we expected ... fun! And Gloria Gaynor was great, for an old girl she can still do her stuff!

(chinacrisis) Robbie did not cancel due to poor audience. As a matter of fact it was sold out 30 mns after being on sale. Mariah, I do not know. But what is for sure, it will be a long time before we can see some big bands in the stadium. If only local residents could shut up for 2 hours(concert will not go beyond 11 PM and at that time they are still out)
Any one got the website of the promoter ? or seen anything in the SCMP today regarding Kool n the Gang ? That would have been really nice!

According to Kool And The gang web site, they were supposed to be in Mexico city on Friday 24 ie the day after HK so there is no way they could make it to HK !! and worst nowhere on their web site they talk about the HK concert which means it was cancelled a long time ago but the promoter dare not to announce it as I guess lots of us came to see them and not the others... so disappointed.....

I too was miffed not to have seen Kool and the Gang, last Thursday! I left a voicemail message last Friday on the Promoter's contact number but no reply as yet. I see today though that the South China Morning Post is on the case! The Promotor surely should not be allowed to get away with this?

Disclaimer: I didn't go to the concert, so have no reason to be disappointed, but this goes to the heart of "fake" advertising and if you did go, and feel aggrieved about it, why not pursue it with the appropriate advertising or consumer office?? I mean, Hong Kong has so much going for it but seems to abandon reason when it comes to advertising. The ads placing Causeway Bay properties in Central; skin whiteners; what a long list. And the response? "You're supposed to know how it works." Well, maybe. Many years ago, Boney M came to HK and lip-synched the whole concert, to great uproar at the time. And what about Whitney Houston and her appearances or non-appearances years ago?
So you're asking: what's my point? If you went to the concert expecting to see K&TG, and they didn't perform, and there was no advance notice, and no apology, and no refund, why not go after the promoter?

We should all get together and follow up on this. My calls and emails also didn't get answered. We cannot let them get away with it. At least 1/3 of the money should be refunded. I'm still fuming...

I saw the artiole in the SCMP as well. I then send and email to Wolfman Jack (the producer)wj@wjhk.com.hk but of course do not expect any answers. The worst was actually on the ticketing web site, the 3 groups were still there until the last minute so even them were not aware most likely. I will try to send an email to the consumer concil (pble is I do not have my tickets anymore !! only my Via receipt for 11 tickets !)

I decided to follow up my email with a call to Wolfman Jack and managed to get through to a voice rather than voicemail. My expectations of progress were low and no surprise, they were not exceeded!
I spoke with two people, who between them tried to palm me off with some flannel that it was a successful show and that they had bought the whole Disco Fever roadshow act - but then could not confirm to me at what point they were aware that K&TG were not part of it. They then had the cheek to say that because the backing band sung Celebration, then the K&TG part was covered!! I did not buy it!
Reading between the lines of their evasive flannel, "lack of knowledge" and general blocking, I deduced that this matter has been referred to their US HQ and they are awaiting feedback.
The person I spoke with gave me an email address of the supposed top man, to whom they said anyone who has a complaint should address their concerns.
I am hesitant to post it here initially in case that breaks any AsiaXpat posting guidelines. Perhaps Ed you can confirm if it would be okay or not to do so? In the meanwhile, if you wish to know it, please send me a PM.

Why not get everyone affected to PM you and you forward on their complaints on their behalf to the address you. That way whatever 'the top man' says or does has to be agreed by everyone involved and no one can get palmed off. Just an idea!
It's a clear breach of advertising standards as what they advertised was not given, the fact the backing group sang one of the songs means sh*te, if Kool And The Gang were advertised as playing, then that's who should have been there to play.
Go for It and let us know what happens!

I just can't believe than the staff do not know anything about their product !!! It is like a car dealer does not know which model he is selling !!!
Diswaher, thanks for updating us on the process but I doubt there will be a follow up as I guess the US company may not pay extra attention to a concert in HK where only 3000 people were attending.
I can't believe they dare to tell you that the KGG part was covered by the GG band !! In that case it was not necessary to get Village People as well or the band could have played dozens of other hits from the disco area and said that all the artists were here !!! (may as well we go to a wanchai bar and we can hear them all at once !!)
