UK VAT

ORIGINAL POST

I have just bought a house in the UK through a HK agent and used the services of a UK based solicitor. I am resident in HK and been away from the UK for over a year. I have had to pay VAT on the solicitors fees. Is there anyway I can claim this tax back?

Interesting. I recently posted a similar question (can I claim back the VAT on the estate agent's commission for selling my UK property?) and received replies suggesting I probably can't. However, the estate agent told me in person last week that he has had overseas clients who have indeed successfully claimed back the VAT. Maybe he was telling a porky, though I can't think why he'd bother. Whatever, I shall have to investigate (not sure yet how) as it was rather a large amount which would be nice to get back.

Thanks, DLL - only just returned to HK yesterday, having been unable to get online for a few weeks, so will contact the IR direct to find out for sure.

Sad to say that it will not be possible to claim a VAT refund, so DLL is correct in what he says above. This was confirmed during my telephone call yesterday to relevant UK tax department (Tel +44 845 0109000) in which I was quoted Section 4.4. of their Lane Related Services bumpf.

Oh well, it was a nice thought...
