Anyone know where I can buy some for cooking? Considering that its the most common cooking oil on earth, its amazing how hard it is to find :-)

It's more popular in African countries but it's really used in Chinese cooking, as far as I know. It's less popular in developed countries with expanding bellies because it is so high in saturated fats. Is your recipe specifically for palm oil or can you substitute?

I'm recreating something I used to eat in Africa, and the flavor of the palm oil is probably essential. I say 'probably' because all my other attempts haven't been quite right...

Riverman, do you mean Coconut oil(Extra Virgin)? I read the recent studies and sad it is the best oil for cooking esp frying, very healthy and low in fat. It's hard to find a good one in HK. Someone I know who is trying to import some good one and will sell it in the office in Central later, if you are interested, let me know.

If you believe the Malaysian Government, palm oil does everything but cure cancer. The rest of the world is not so sure. In that country, they make ice cream from it, and that's just how it tastes. But who are we to judge: Riverman wants some, and some of the brands for sale in the two major supermarket chains, as well as the specialty markets in Times Square and Pacific Place, sell blended oils that include palm oil. Otherwise, yes, the southeast Asian shops (you could try the Indonesian shops scattered around Causeway Bay near Victoria Park) might have some. Maybe get a friend to bring some back from K.L. ...
