Questions about breastfeeding

My son is 5 weeks old and I've been exclusively breastfeeding him. I'm feeding him on demand. He has enough wet diapers and poo poo every day and he's gaining weight well. But I'm still concerned about his eating pattern. He sometimes needs to be fed every hour while sometimes he doesn't wake up for food in 4 hours. I've been reading your threads and seems like baby should be fed for at least 20 min or more on each breast and switch breast if one side is well-drained. But my son never hangs on to the breast for more than 15 min. Once off-latched, he is not willing to open his mouth again (sometimes he releases the nipple himself. Sometimes he dozes off with the nipple in his mouth.) Should I force him to latch on for longer time?

Another question is, when should I start develop a feeding pattern for him and how?

Looking forward to your advice!

Thanks Cara. I'm just thinking whether baby will automatically come up with a schedule himself (at least a more predictable one and a longer break in between each feed)? Or should I gradually put him on a schedule so that I can have better sleep? I need to get back to work some time later and wish to think beforehand.
