Wooden or plastic garden furniture

Hi All,

Where can I buy outdoor furniture in Kowloon/NT North?

What are your experiences with outdoor garden furniture in HK (before we buy ourselves) ?

White Plastic table/chairs:

(+) cheap, (+) water/damp proof

(-) easily blown away during typhoon season

(-) will age in prolonged sunlight and become brittle?

Wood:

(+) Looks good! (+) Too heavy to blow away?

(-) Will rot due to rain and humidity (-) Expensive

Any input welcome!

Thanks!

invest in proper wood furniture. by that I do not mean pine or other stuff, but good teak wood.

Teak is so dense that insects cannot bite through it and it does not rot...thats why they used it for boats in the old days.

Do some research on teak. Good mature teak is brown...but teak that has been discarded and left untreated in the sun turns grey.

Be careful because I know there is a shop out there that is selling teak furniture and after two years it turns grey, and they say it is supposed to be like that. From my research, it only turns grey if it is cut up and untreated and exposed. Once treated, it is fantastic. We have teak furniture, we do not polish and it looks brand new.

Personally I like wooden furniture. Apart from being flimsy, I think white plastic tends to look cheap and can look worse when it has yellowed in the sun, not to mention be quite glaring when the sun bounces off it. There are alternatives to white plastic, however, if you don't fancy teak. I'm not sure if it's a newish type of plastic or some kind of anodised/coated aluminium, but friends in Australia had a really nice looking table in a grey/green colour with a strengthened glass top. Good sturdy matching chairs too, and the nice thing is the only maintenance they need is the occasional wipe down with a damp cloth. I think I've seen something similar in Horizon Plaza.

Not sure if you can get a jarrah hard wood out door setting or not, if you can it will last a decade or more, with simple oiling once every 3 years. They look great with a emerald green canvas/timber/brass sun umbrella located at the tables centre hole, too.

You can use regular engine oil with concrete tint ( red oxide ) mixed in with it, then apply generously with a rag over every exposed surface, this will water proof the wood and maintain a rich black wood timber colour when it drys. jarrah being a very heavy hard wood, I doubt anything in Hong Kong of an insect nature would be determined enough to bore into it too.

Don't listen to the idiots who say wood rots, we had every window in our tri level home replaced, with polyurethaned cedar timber casement windows with solid brass snibs, latches and extender arms. They look as good today, as they did 5 years ago.

We are exposed to enough synthetic materials in Hong Kong, get the timber outdoor setting and enjoy the asthetic beauty of it.

Tequila Kola in Aberdeen might be able to help or one of the many furniture shops that are located in that building. There are atleast 4 shops that sell indoor and outdoor odds and sods.

Shenzhen is the place to find cheap stuffs. They have them there because my neigbour just furished his patio last weekend.. We both own a penthouse suite in shenzhen with huge patio/garden...

But you get what you pay for in a lot of cases and wouldn't recommend Shenzhen for any major purchases.

Completely corrected, you get what you pay for but not all items sold in shenzhen are bad quality... You just need to go to the high end shops... A lot of these items can be found that are for exports with ISO compliance... Keep in mind, majority of the products now a days are produced in China including Ikea, Budwisier beer, Mark and Spencer lady's under-wears, Products of Walmarts, Canadian Tires, and almost all the appliances in your house...

I am with Thames on that one too.

Shenzhen is a horrible shopping experience and best left alone.

I prefer to buy kitchen/laundry appliances that are made in Germany, never had any problems with Miele or AEG, you pay more in the short term, but long term, 20 years lifespan isnt unusual for brands like these.

Long term you will save more and enjoy a much better product experience. Its also environmentally responsible to buy an appliance that lasts 20 years than to buy 3 cheaper inferior brands that last 20years in total. 2 less appliances that are wasting space in landfills.
