If you are in Brisbane, I would suggest you head to Southbank (in the city). It has a man made beach which overlooks the city (great for the really hot day xmas always is), bbqs, sandpits and play areas for the kids, and restaurants. Have a look here http://www.totaltravel.com.au/travel/qld/brisbanearea/innerbrisbane/photos/southbank

If you have a car, head for the hinterland. Lots of nice national parks, walking trails, waterfalls, etc.

I'll second that suggestion. Not sure but I'd think that it's only Christmas Day that sees the bigger tourist attractions in the area closed - I think it's one of only 3 days in the year when they are closed, the others being Good Friday and one other I can't recall. But the beaches are open - and that might be a good option for one day. You might find that places like Surfers Paradise are far from being a ghost town as beach activities remain one of the favourite Christmas activities in Oz. And if you do hire a car better make sure you have a good map, because Queensland is a bit more than a city and you wouldn't want to get lost - even the city of Gold Coast covers quite an extensive area with many good beaches.

Thanks! We are still looking at what options are available. Any beaches which are recommended? We are staying near the casino. Even the casino is closed. LOL

Just about the entire stretch from Surfers down to Cooloongatta on the NSW border. Different people have their particular favourites, but I haven't been there for more than 10 years now.

Hey - I'm from Brisbane and I can assure you that Christmas Day is the only day that everything will be closed. You will find alot of things are still open on the Gold Coast even on Chrissy Day, just the major shopping complexes will be shut. I'm suprised that the Casino is closed - that usually isn't the case I thought. The whole stretch of the coast has great beaches, but if you have kids then Coolangatta is probably the place to go - more family orientated. Enjoy it and wear plenty of sunscreen!!
