I'm going to be doing lots of cooking with this spice. Does anyone know where I can get an industrial size container of quality turmeric at a decent price in HK?

There are a number of spice shops in Hong Kong, but it's whether they sell turmeric or not. They will sell it in larger quantities

Try giving these places a call...

Yuan Heng Spice Co. which is in Sheung Wan, tel: 2542 0275.

And Calford which is Cheung Sha Wan, tel: 2367 8281. This place also supplies hotels and restaurants.

There's at least one Indian grocery shop on G/F Chungking Mansions who sells large bags of the stuff. Cheap as chips, or should I say chapatis. Also Mirador Mansions and any other Indian store.

Turmeric's very useful for improving liver function and it has recently been reported that it also has anti-cancer properties.

Simple Simon, I guess you probably wouldn't want to swallow tablespoons of the raw stuff unless you want your teeth to have the Tango'd look. I looked at various sites on the Net talking about turmeric's health benefits and they refer to it in its cooked state. Best shovel as much as you can in soups, stews, curries etc. and congratulate yourself on how healthy you're being. You should then reward yourself with extra beers.
