Break it down...

44 hours per week x 4 weeks in a month = 176 hours a month.

$12,000 per month / 176 hours a month = $68 per hour

or if you want to be more accurate:

44 hours a week x 52 weeks in a year = 2288 hours

$12,000 per month x 12months = $144,000 a year

$144,000 a year divide by 2288 hours a year = $63 an hour

Maybe that's the 4th variation. Basic fault with the first option above is that there are more than 4 weeks in a month, so (as stated) the second is more accurate. But usually an hourly rate is more than that calculated by a standard formula because the benefits are often different. In the end, though, it's up to you what you pay provided you don't break any laws. Obviously, though, you need to agree the rate with the employee in the contract.

Unconfuse yourself. If you write your own book and pay to print it, the first copy will cost you a bomb and the next 9999 copies will be much cheaper because of the set-up costs, etc. Likewise if you hire part-time, you can't just divide by the number of hours in a month. Benefits impact the total package. Part-time workers sometimes demand more per hour than full-time workers to compensate for this. Pick a mutually satisfactory amount. It doesn't have to be calculated to the minute.
