I have 3 yards of gold organza that i want to make into a table runner and napkins.

Can someone please tell me how i sew organza? Do i continue the same as other material such as cotton, or is there a knack?

Thanks

Organza frays - as you know. And it's very fine - also as you know. A table runner combined with, say, silk would nice. But I don't know if organza napkins are practical.

You can edge organza with a rolled edge to stop it fraying and use a french seam to join two pieces together.

The organza napkins will be for show with the linen ones inside amd i want the runner to be organza so it's clear and can see the gold stars that will be placed on th table underneath and don't detract from the candles.

Claire, what's a roled edge (is that where you just turn the seams over twice and sew) and also what's a french seam? Ta

The french seam is for when you are joining two pieces of organza together.

The rolled edge gives a finish such as you find on silk scarves. Some sewing machines come with a rolled edge foot (the feet also come in different sizes) but you will possibly need a fair bit of practise to get the finish right.

Alternatively you can sew a rolled edge by hand. For a narrow flat hem, stitch 6-7mm from the raw edge. Fold the organza on the stitch line and press with an iron. Then stitch as close to the folded edge as you can, aim for around 1.5mm. Lay the stitched edge in the flat of your hand and trim the excess fabric as close to the stitch line as you can. Fold fabric up about 6-7mm and press with the iron, then stitch down.
