If its a used car, the hong Kong used car trade has more tricks than Mandrake the magician.

Always try to buy a used car privately, via this website from a fellow expat who has had their car maintained regularly with receipts to prove. As an added safety precaution get an inspection report by the HKAA to list any major issues that may require big $$$ in the future or signs of major accident repairs.

Do it this way and you are likely to save about 20 - 30% compared to the identicle car being sold by a dealer who has massive rents to pay and only your money in his/her pocket on their mind.

That said, you should never pay as much for a used car here as you would elsewhere. There just isn't a strong market for used vehicles. So if an expat on this site tries to sell you their car at US used car prices, tell them it's too much.

Yes, I'd agree with the above. We bought a car from a reputable local expat dealer and naively believed him when he promised he'd drop the service history off to our home (can't remember the excuse why he didn't have it on him right then, but it seemed entirely plausible at the time). Needless to say, we never did receive the paperwork - because we now know he never had it - though he assured us that it wouldn't be a problem when it comes to selling the car. (?!) Best go with a private sale - just make sure you get everything you're supposed to before handing over the dosh!
