Landlord profiting off of electric bill

ORIGINAL POST

I think I've just discovered that my landlord is charging us double for the Electricity bill. Is this allowable? Perhaps I calculated wrong, but after finding the Power bill in the mailbox (it's mailed to our shared flat, not to him), I took the total due, divided it by the # of tenants, and found a sum equaling HALF what my landlord wrote on my receipt.

Let me ask this way... is $400 a logical amount to charge for a Studio (300sqft) apartment?

How long is a piece of string ?

Wanna trade bills ? our last bill was $1700, for 2 adults and 2 young teens living in a 2100ft2 tri level. Not that our bill is excessive, far from it. $400 for your space sounds about right.

Size of the apartment is only one variable in determining if the bill is an accurate or fair one or not. It also depends on how often you ar ethere, what appliances you use, how long you have your lights on etc etc etc etc .

From your original post, it appears that the bill is for x amount and as you are not the only tenant, why are you paying all the bill? Who is the other tenant? The landlord? You also have to make sure that the bill is infact just for your property and that maybe another bill goes to the other tenant.

Yes, sorry, re-reading it does sound confusing. Let me try again. ... there are four tenants. The bill in the mailbox read $748. One of my neighbors and myself were charged around $400 each. I'm no Math wiz, but 1/4 of 748 is around 200. Therefore the 400 seems like double the price.

Are landlords allowed to do this? Or, is there more to a Power bill payment than what's coming from the power company? (We pay Maintainence and Water seperately.)
