Old Computer

ORIGINAL POST

I have a desk top and two lap tops that are old and I want to know if there is any resale market (someone who comes and pick it up). Also, what is the best way to erase all personal file before resell/discarding it?

you can reformat the harddrives with fdisk or any other program that you prefer, but that leaves a machine without any operating system - a very low value commodity - old machine without o/s - if you can't start it to prove that it is not a "boat anchor", it will probably be in your hands for a very long time. Value - probably nil. See if there is a computer recycling group that rehabs old hardware for distribution to charity groups, poor kids, etc.

Reformat the drive, reinstall the OS from the properly licensed disks that go with the system, and use a third-party program to "erase unused disk space", preferably one that writes random data to the disk several times, for ultimate security.

If there's any market at all, it would be on ebay Hong Kong. Unfortunately, HK Ebay doesn't have an English interface (and I've had a word with Ebay about this, as Singapore Ebay does have English) so you'll need an interpreter to help you place the ad.

Last time I had an old computer, I donated it to Crossroads here in HK. They collect computers and other household items, check and fix them, then deliver to needy families, schools, etc. Computers are always welcome, and more details are on the website:

They were so helpful to arrange to pick up the computer along with sofa and other items, and hope it all went to good use.

Hope this helps, Robert
