I am really bad with numbers. Please help.

Recently, I set up a Joint Account with my boyfriend which means we put in 50 : 50 into this account.

Recently, I paid for our holiday from my own Personal Account which cost me $20,000. My boyfriend told me to reimburse myself by transferring $20,000 from our Joint Account into my own Personal Account. I did so.

Now, I am confused.....

As I have paid upfront $20,000 for the holiday, and if we are to really split the cost, my boyfriend should pay me $10,000 from his own account and not ask me to transfer $20,000 from our Joint Account right? This is because I have already put in 50% of whatever is in our Joint Account. So in the end, I have paid for both our holidays from my own Personal Account + got reimbursed half of it only from the Joint Account since the other half is actually the money I put into the Joint Account.

Does it make sense or am I just stupid with maths?

To the person who was just deleted, consider my decision not to ban you an early christmas gift...we are here to help - not provide sarcastic commentary. thank you.

And, using my grade 3 math, your BF is right.

You spend 20k of your own cash from your own account.

The cash in your joint account is half yours and half his.

10k from that account went to pay for his half the trip. The other 10k went to pay for your half of the trip.

If you paid the initial 20K out of your personal account, your BF should reimburse you 10K.

If you had taken only that 10K that he owes you from the joint account, that would mean 5K from him and 5K from you - as you put into it equally - so you would have paid 15K and he would have paid 5K.

By transferring the 20K from the joint account, that means 10K from you and 10K from him - again as you both contribute equally to the joint account. This is as green says.

If you follow eddiewhim's maths that you get the holiday for free, this would only be so if you had not equally contributed to the joint account.

Ed,

Thanks for the x-mas present... Sorry for unable to hold back on the extra sarcastic comment, but may I comment on your use of the wording "using my grade 3 math", which is the same as saying It doesn't take a grade 3 to figured out the math.. If I am Stinky123, I would be deeply insulted...Here is a x-mas present back to you...

Ed,

I don't believe you, mandatory educational requirement anywhere in the world imposes at least Grade 4 to be the lowest grade achievement before leaving school... And you would at least need to be an u-grad to manage this forum to this success rate... AsiaXPAT is considered to be a pretty successful site and I am sure your boss would not consider anything less from you...

Not sure what a grade 3, 4 or any other grade is but in the UK when you finish the last year of school at age 16 you can leave (based upon age) no matter what you achieved or failed to achieve grade/exam wise - more than 30,000 UK kids leave school each year without a single qualification (2003 figures).
