problem switching to whole milk

Hi, Moms,

My daughter's 13 months old and i recently tried to give her whole milk for one of her feeds (the pm one) instead of the formula that she's been on since infancy. Did this for about three days since Thursday.

She started pooing more often after that (not loose or watery) and yesterday, she had a very bright red painful rash in her bum and the front area. Have started Desitin and oatmeal soaks.

Did you guys go through any of this when weaning off formula onto cow's milk? Is it the milk? Does this mean she's lactose intolerant?

Will of course be checking with her pedia tomorrow but just wondering if anyone's been here?

Thanks!

Our baby is going to turn one in about a week. We just started this weekend to add whole milk to his solid meal, and that went okay so far - but it is a small amount.

I plan to switch from breast feeding to whole milk gradually over the next month.

Will be very interested to follow this thread and learn about HK2 and other experiences doing this.

We have been adding full fat cow's milk into baby's food for about 2 months. Baby is now 9.5 months. We haven't had any problems, I made sure when I first introduced it, that was the only new ingredient in whatever he ate for 2 days.

On a regular basis now, I use milk in his cooking,e especially for making cheese sauce that Annabel Karmel does in her books.

I know we are not supposed to introduce cow's milk as a drink until one but because he has always been a terrible formula drinker, we no longer do an afternoon milk feed- this has been replaced by a snack. So sometimes I just add a few mouthfuls of cow's milk for him to drink with the snack. Somehow he is more receptive to drink cow's milk out of a straw cup than milk of out of bottle at this time.

I have 2 friends whose kids are above one. The introduced cow's milk as a drink in 2 ways:

1) Mixing cow's milk with formula and gradually reduce proportion of formula until it is totally cow's milk. But I have doubts about it as I am not sure if it's ok to mix cow's milk and formula in a bottle?

2) E.g. if kid is doing say 3 milk feeds(am, pm, eve), make the afternoon one cow's milk and then gradually introduce cow's milk for the other feeds.

HK2, if your kid is reacting to the milk, maybe just hold it off first and check with your PD since you are not sure if it's lactose intolerance or milk allergy?

HK2, I will definitely hold off cows milk till you see your paed. My baby is allergic to milk as she reacts with a bright red rash on her neck and nape. Our paed. allergist told us the way to give whole milk is give bub 1 teaspoon's worth at day 1, then 2 teasps at day 2, etc, ie give very very gradually so that the gut can adjust appropriately. He also mentioned no trying of whole milk till 1 year old.

I introduced cows milk to my 1 year old firstly for his very small mid- pm drink. He hated it, spat it out and I went back to formula for a couple of days.

I reintroduced it one morning, for his first feed, slightly more room temp. than fridge cold, and he drank the whole lot no problem. I then fed him cows milk all day and have done since then. No rash, no problems so far. ( Its been nearly 2 weeks). I tried adding a miniscule bit of formula the first couple of times ( it mixed OK), just so he recognised some of his old drink, but i stopped after a day, as I figured why make the process longer and more drawn out than necessary.

I would highly recommend morning rather than later in the day introduction.

Hi, Moms,

Spoke to the pedia who said it could not be a lactose intolerance thing because she's been on a lactose formula since one month old. He said could just be coincidental that she started pooing more and as long as it was not loose stools, it's also not a problem.

Her rash has cleared up and today i started her on Master's Pura fresh milk which the pedia had also recommended - warmed it up a bit and she had it nicely - now let's see if there's any reaction to it. Will keep you posted.
