I am planning on travelling to Japan for the first time in CNY. I am seeking advice on which is the best place in Japan to visit. I am seeking a place that has much to offer in the way of culture, shows, sights, and history but is also close to the countryside/ocean where I can get some good pictures. Any advice is much appreciated on what both Osaka and Kyoto have to offer and what are must see and do things while in Japan.

This reply might be too late for you, but FYI. Osaka and Kyoto are less than 1 hour distance by train. Osaka - good food in good price, Kyoto - historical sites, authentic food, so called Kyo-Ryori in relatively higher prices. Spend one day in Kyoto and go to Osaka in the evening for dinner and drink and stay. Have fun there!

Kyoto has a number of reasonable inn/hostel/hotel catering to foreigners, no need to travel all the way to Osaka.
