Though it is supposed to be able to read mpeg4 files, my DVD player cannot read a .mp4 file I recently downloaded from the net...

Would anybody know how I could convert this .mp4 file into an .avi file ?

There are a number of programs you could purchase out there that would do this... but honestly, it would be tremendously easier to just re-download it in a different format...
