White goods from Australia and bbq

ORIGINAL POST

My family is planning to move to HK in August. Have any Australians taken their washing machines/dryers/fridgers to HK and changed the plugs? Since company is paying for relocation, I'd like to find out if this is doable. Opinions?

Also, if we have some balcony space, is it generally socially acceptable to have a bbq on your balcony?

Thanks!

I've not transported "white goods", but have transported electronics. All electrical appliances from Australia are compatible voltage wise in Hong Kong. As you've obviously worked out, the plugs need to be changed. This is an easy job that anyone handy with a screw driver and plyers can do. If your not comfortable messing around with anything electrical, any handyman or electrician can help you out.

If you are getting a relocation allowance, it may be easier to buy all new here in HK.

BBQ's on the balcony are generally acceptable.

Thanks for your insights - I think I will wait and see what our housing is like, whether it will fit or not, or already has white goods, before I decide. If I can take them, I will, otherwise it's off to ebay.

Thanks again.

If you can then bring your white goods. Bring power boards and change the plug on them.

As for the BBQ, a must if you have room. Recently went through the exercise, they (BBQ Galore equivalent) wanted 40,000 HKD for a large SS BBQ that I purchased in Sydney for a fraction of the cost and freighted up here by air - all 120kg of it. Worked out a hell of a lot cheaper than buying locally.
