A conviction in HK and implications for singapore

In 2004, I picked up a minor conviction for common assault while living in HK ( I hit a work man who was harrassing my wife outside our apartment). Anyway, I was convicted on my own plea and then received an absolute discharge from the judge. Does anyone know what implications, if any, this might have on my ability to work and reside in Singapore? Any insight would be appreciated.

I'm not a legal eagle, but aren't "convicted" and "absolute discharge" mutually exclusive? I can't remember whether the SG immigration arrival forms have a question about such history, but the wording of the question could leave you exposed. The application for a work visa is likely to include such questions, so that's where the problem (if any) is most likely to arise.

PS: Just an observation, but I think the SG authorities are more likely to be interested in how a person who goes by the name 'Miss D' has a wife!

That made me giggle. Miss D is my wife whose sign-on I used to post this thread. Apparently, you can be convicted, then receive an absolute discharge from the judge as a sentence. It didn't make much sense to me either at the time. I have since read that an absolute discharge can be handed down in circumstances where Judge sees the conviction itself to be punishment enough for the crime.

The best way is to ask a Hong Kong lawyer.
