I hope someone here has the experience and answers I am looking for. The situation: I am American, wife is Chinese. I've always known that our son was/is an American citizen. We recently aquired his American Birth Certificate and American Passport.
Here is the problem. We are planning our first trip as a family back to the U.S. Our son, being born in China, needs an 'exit visa' before he can leave. Now this does not look to be a problem in itself. What bothers me is that in order to get this exit visa, he must give up any/all documents that currently allow him the benefits of his "Chinese Status." I.E. he loses his chinese I.D. #, his name is removed from the Chinese family book.
Basicly he loses the ability to utilize the Chinese school system, medical system, and other things of this nature. Now, I realize it comes down to policy and politics here. But, I have to let it be known, I am not an Expat. I'm a simple foriegner here. So, any break and or loophole that I can benefit from here is more than helpful.
No matter the outcome, we are proceeding with our trip and if we have to give up his Chinese status, so be it. I am reaching out for others answers and guidence to find a solution to this delima. Thank you for anything you all can do or say about this.

maybe you can get him an american visa stamped onto his chinese passport and travel with that.
That way you might not have to declare his american documents...or get him an 'exit' and reentry visa...
