Hi
We are an Aussie couple with a 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 year old boys relocating to Hong Kong in April.
Trying to figure out whether to bring our push bikes. Do people ride bikes? Are there bike tracks around where adults can ride bikes,or just parks that the kids would ride theirs? Are there places to lock them up?
Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks

At the age your little ones are at they will be able to poodle around on their bikes in many complexes that have a podium level.... not race around mind you. There is about five or six kilometers of flat footpath (one small hill) between South Bay beach and Deepwater bay beach with some of that being a boardwalk (although concrete) between Repulse Bay and Deepwater Bay and then you can come back again. There are designated cycle paths that the whole family can ride on in Tai Po - but you will need a car to drive there as you are not allowed to take bikes on the trains. About 35 minutes away from HK island. Set in gardens and on the waterfront. When you look around many of the areas that xpats don't typically live in there are a few more wide walk ways that can be used to ride a bike. Down in front of the Stanly Ho sports fields there is a wide flat area that small ones can race about on. Again in front of the water. The Sports grounds down in Happy Valley have a track around them a little one can cycle on and I think many kids go to Bowen Road to trundle up and down. There is motor cross in the new territory but not sure about bmx type tracks although they are a bit young yet. Our PE teacher at school goes out most weekends flinging herself and her bike down mountains - I've seen the bruises! if you are an adult into that type of exercise. I also know many people who ride from the Peak right down to Big Wave Bay beach and you often see lots of cyclists leaving from the big Wave Bay beach early in the morning on sports rides. Some expat housing areas have somewhere to put a kids bike, a common area in the parking lot. What you will probably not find is the large oval with a bike track around the outside like in aus and so what stressed me out when we took ours out was that if they get too far ahead of you or you have more than one to supervise alone they could be riding towards a road or ditch that is not fenced.

bikes are allowed to be taken on the trains for free during non-peak hours.
