If a nice Japanese mother-in-law in not available, try Step by Step Sushi by Katsuji Yamamoto/Roger Hicks.

It's not only sushi, you will learn other things.

Or Japanese Cooking for Health and Fitness by Kiyoko Konishi, easy to follow and simple cooking.
