i had been told by many different jewelers to soak the piece in diluted dishwashing detergent, preferably warm, brush it well with a toothbrush to get rid of the dust and it will shine like new.
and so i've tried and it works like magic.

Yes, using detergent will clean up the jewelery, but use a baby toothbrush and also check out the "claws" which hold the diamond, if it is an old setting.

I use baby toothbrush and mild toothpaste to clean my Tiffany eternity ring, so far nothing untoward has happened yet.

That is exactly what my jeweller told me!
When I go to the jeweller, they always offer to clean whatever I am wearing (they made most of it), and they take it away to the back room and then give it back to me shiny and perfect.
One day I followed them - toothbrush, warm water and mild clothing detergent... they said don't brush left and right, more like just touch the jewellery with the brush, then lift and touch again... works great.
How funny, I had thought they had some big secret ingredient... ha ha
Now if I wanted to actually polish my gold and get ri of scratches, I assume they need to do something more technical? As the above gets rid of dirt and gives it a shine, but does not take away actual scrtatches.

your jeweler will be able to polish the piece with a machine to smooth out the nicks for you.

Just cleaned my diamonds - rings, earings and whatnot. I've heard of toothpaste, windex, mild detergent, baby toothbrushes, but the alcohol was a new one - so I tried it. I really liked it - because I felt like there was no residue afterwards. I did still need to take a toothbrush to it gently but the scum came off in a very satisfying manner as I rinsed it again in the alcohol. If I keep it up every week, perhaps I won't even need the toothbrush. Better go stock up on alcohol.

My mum swears by alka seltzer. dilute as normal in water then put your jewelery in for 2 mins.
