Setting up home network

ORIGINAL POST

According to Windows it's a snap. But I can't manage to make two fully equipped laptops talk together and I can't be that stupid because I had two technicians here that couldn't manage either and they spent together about 8 hours. One of them installed a router (which I shouldn't need)promised to come back and even didn't charge for it. I never saw him again.

If you know any technician who can help: I need to share files and printers... Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks Frederic

Are you setting up a wireless or wired network?

Thanks, but I don't agree with you conc the router. I have had wireless network without router before as both laptops have wireless LAN. It is since I had to reinstall one of my laptops that I haven't been able to setup a network again. The so called"easy" Windows "setup a wireless network and/or "setup a small home or office network" simply don't work.

You can connect two wirelss laptops in "ad-hoc" mode without a wireless router

Pardon my ignorance, but I also have a question concerning a home wireless network. Well, 2 in fact.

1. I was unable to connect my laptop to my wireless connection and when the technician came around, he said that my router was broken, but was then able to reconnect. How did he do this and is without plugging my computer directly into the phoneline? Sometimes my computer shows that my computer is connected to the network and sometimes not, however the internet is working either way! How can this be?

2. How do I security enable my network, so others in the apartment complex aren't using it. I figured it would be simple but windows "help and support center" seems unable to either help or support me with regards to this issue.

Thanks for any help you can give me guys.

1 - Well, you don't really need a router, except in my case where there is a problem somewhere. If two computers have a wiresless LAN they can connect directly "ad hoc". The funny thing is that you may have to make sure to be connected to the internet. If you have a problem to connect, just make sure you are connected. Make sure the LAN is turned on as well as on some computers it can be switched off (Sony). If you are connected to the other computer and disconnect from the internet your computers may still connect. Don't ask me why, but that's how it is.....

2 - A wireless connection is created with a code that only your computers share and normally your neighbours cannot use it.

Number 2> this is not true. In order to set up a "code", you have to set it up in the router, and any computers you want to be on the network. With my router, I found this a difficult task, and couldn't figure it out. Instead, I set the router so that it could only accept communications from the specific computers (Machine Acces Code address) I want it to. So there's no password, but other computers simply cannot connect.

To do this, which is easier than setting up a password, look in your router's manual for "MAC access" (MAC doesn't stand for Macintosh, it means "Machine Access Code".)

In simpler terms, my router is set up to only talk to "Jack's Computer" and "Jill's Computer". If "John's Computer" tries to connect, the router completely ignores it.

I also don't agree:When you setup a wireless network "ad hoc" via windows' feature "setup a wireless network" you will be asked to insert a flashdrive in the first computer and to insert it into all other computers in your network. In fact, Windows creates the code for you and you transfer it via the flashdrive to the other computers. You can also print out this code. This is what your technician has done. But maybe you can let me know who that was, as he might be able to help ME with my problem....

thanks for trying to help guys, but i think my situation may have been slightly misunderstood. i have only one computer (my notebook) in my apartment, so an ad-hoc network is certainly not something that applies to me.

i simply can't understand how, if my technician tells me my wireless router is broken and my computer says that there is no connection to a wireless network, my computer is able to connect to the internet.

i am still also very unsure as to how i can security-enable my wireless connection!
