Potty Training - 3.4yrs

Hi everyone,

I'm in a great dillema. I have been training my son since he was 2.4yrs, I totally removed diapers except at night. He finally started peeing in the toilet but poop only on the floor, I tried everything. We went for our christmas vacation-2 weeks, he surprised me, he regularly went to the toilet without any fuss, no accidents, I finally thought it was done and felt very happy, until we came back to hkg, for a few days he was fine then suddenly he would refuse to go to the toilet and start messing on the floor. The toilet bowl is fine not intimidating, he even has 2 toilet seats. My husband says probably he suddenly switched back to the usual routine. He understands everything, he's 3.4yrs. I've even tried the Gina Ford method. Any advice/suggestions.

Thanx.

Have you tried a star chart? It sounds more like an attention seeking problem, correct me if I am wrong but at 3.4 he should have no problems going to the toilet especially if he wees in one!

My sister who had problems with No 2's with her daughter used the star chart as a reward when she sat on the toilet. I think you should try this for definite. They then went out and chose some Tinkerbell knickers as a reward at the end when

she stopped messing. I have seen tv programmes on this and its always down to getting attention.

Hi, actually I've tried the star chart method, almost everything. I guess it is an attention seeking problem.I am a stay at home mom, I mean how much more attention could I give. Today he wanted to poop, he was trying to get comfortable on the floor but he knew I was around, was trying to shoo me away, I just picked him up and put him on the pot, he yelled a little but then sat on his own and did it.Probably he's just teasing me!

Well I hope it lasts.

We resorted to the smartie method! 4 smarties for a poo in the loo. Worked for my kids although I'm sure someone will say you shouldn't use chocolate or food as a reward.........

hard spot to be in. But if he really is doing it to get your attention - then the simple answer is don't give him attention for it. He obviously knows how to do it in the potty - as he did it during the vacation - (something change? Daddy around less? new baby?) so ignoring the bad action would be the answer. So if he poops, you quietly clean it up, you quietly change him if necessary and then ignore it. DOn't make a fuss over it.

My daughter went through something similar - her pee was perfect - never a problem, even through naps and overnight, but she would insist on pooing in her pants. Drove me bonkers. Until I just decided to let her be and ignore it. voila! Finally she has started to go into the potty and when she did I was soooo excited for her - she likes that attention a lot more!

hhcc,I would really like to ignore him like u said, but i'm so scared that he would actually never go to the loo anymore coz'he just loves doing it on the floor. But I think I'll just try & ignore him. Lets see.

I had a hard time with my 3 yr old who wouldnt go in the potty. She kept telling me that her sissy got to wear diapers and so would she. Her sister is 2 yrs old and so i potty trained them together. For my oldest tho. I did the star thing but it didnt work either. She just figured it out on her own. However, i think that sometimes it just takes time and each child is different. Ignoring him can cause two reactions either he does it more to get attention or does other things to add to the problem or he goes in the potty. Its worth trying. When he goes on the floor dont say a word about it. When he sits down on the potty cheer, dance and sing. Seems to give encouragement. This wont happen over night its gonna take weeks til you see any response.
