START

Our Super 14s coverage kicks off again around the region on February 2nd. We will be showing all the games again this year with the exception of those played in South Africa. Please note that sadly, we still do not have broadcast rights for the games in Japan or China. Games will be encrypted. For those of you new to Australia Network or who did not see the Rugby last year, please visit http://australianetwork.com/rugby for details on how to receive the games.

You can now download your full Super 14s broadcast schedule from http://australianetwork.com/sportslounge

I think it's on Star Sports that I usually watch the 6 Nations, plus an occasional UK club match (they're on every week but I watch them only occasionally), but whether that's enough enticement to pay for a whole year's subscription I'm not sure.

What are you talking about? Australia Network showed the rugby last year and we did not need any extra equipment - games just came on at the right time. The NRL league was also on Saturdays and Sundays, same deal - no encryption.

NRL is not encrypted - only the Super 14 matches. Originally the Saturday & Sunday afternoon AFL matches were also to be encrypted but they changed that at the last minute. Withe the Super 14s at the start of last season the encryption warning had been issued but it didn't come into effect until around Round 3 or 4. And even then it wasn't always in place by the time the game started - often I'd watch the start in the full knowledge that sooner or later the picture would disappear to be replaced by a blank blackness with a line of code across the bottom. Whether individual viewers are affected by the encryption depends on the setup at the point the signal enters the building. It's nothing about extra equipment, more to do with the setting on the existing receiving equipment. That's about as technical as I can get. I pleaded with our building management (a 4-star hotel) and the then-ABC even offered to send them the instructions in Cantonese, but I gave up in the end. Despite my tendency to enjoy 'the game they play in heaven' I decided in the end that it simply wasn't worth the effort. To those who don't have the problem then congratulations (and a hint of jealousy on my part). To those who do then commiserations. To those who ignore warnings then don't say you haven't been...

I had no problem receiving Australia Network for last year's Super 14's; no encryption and no charge. I'm assuming it will be the same this year.

I seem to recall the ecryption issue was discussed on this forum last year and that people in hotels/serviced apartments were generally the ones with an encryption problem..?

On a related topic can anyone confirm the rumour that Cable has the rights to show the Rugby World Cup later this year..? I was planning to get rid of Cable at the end of the English Premier League season, but will keep it on until after the RWC if that's the case.

I've just received an email from AN saying that Super14s will not be encrypted for NOWTV domestic users.

Great, so does that mean that we should be able to watch it? I've just had a 'fun' conversation with PCCW about the channel being encrypted, he had nooooo idea what i was on about, all i want it to watch the rugby at home!!

You should know the answer at some time after 6pm today when the first match is due to be televised. Incidentally, as that's Blues v Crusaders it's my guess that it's not live. I shall be watching with interest also to see what luck I have this year. There has been a significant change in our management personnel so I might be tempted to try my luck with them again this year if my screen goes blank, but there again this lot looks as blank as last year's screens!

I have the same problem, just a message saying satellite signal interruption. No idea if it means its encrypted, am trying to talk to PCCW about it - grrr. Maybe around 8pm if the channel works again then we will know if it was encrypted or not!!

It's the encryption. Strangely enough the later game (Western Force v Otago Highlanders at 11pm) was NOT encrypted. Maybe because it wasn't live. But there again I can't imagine that the Blues v Crusaders game was live either - 6pm here would have been either 10pm or 11pm in AKL - and yet it was encrypted. I'm going to contact AN today to find out exactly what is happening re some games being encypted but not others. I'll be back.

To anyone who's interested here's the email I sent to AN and their response. Unfortunately it looks like last weekend's TV rugbyfest will not be repeated - at least not in my house. Still, the Six Nations should be more exciting anyway.

Your Question/Comment

Your question or comment was about Encryption

"I was expecting to see no Super 14 matches because last year, despite my pleadings (and some help from your own technical team), our building management declined to take any action. The viewing schedule published by AN on Wednesday also confirmed that all Super 14 matches would be encrypted, and true to form my screen went blank at 6pm (HK time) on Friday and stayed that way for almost 2 hours. But then late on Friday night I managed to watch the Force v Highlanders match - and on Saturday I saw both televised matches. So are they encrypted or not?"

Your Answer

"Thank you for your email. As you are aware, you were unable to receive the Australia Network encrypted transmission on Friday 2nd February at the commencement of the Super 14s season (18:00HK time) but later in the evening you were able to see 2 matches.

This was due to a fault with our encryption system. To minimise this inconvenience, we decided to switch off the encryption system and then repeat the 1st game at 21:00HK time. This is why you were able to see the games later in the evening.

We are currently working extremely hard to resolve this problem in time for next weekend's games. Sadly, that will probably mean that you will not be able to see the games again.

Best Regards

Nicola
