Hoping someone can clarify. Just had a baby and need to get her a Dutch passport. However,when I contacted the Dutch consulate here in HK, it said that my husband and I's marriage certificate (we were married in Scotland, UK), has to be "legalized" in Scotland! The consulate said if were were married in HK, for example, we would get the marriage certificate "legalized" at the High Court. So, does anyone have any clue as to what "legalized" means? The Dutch consulate could not provide any further clarification, surprisingly and it will be difficult to get anything done to the marriage certificate in Scotland as we live here in HK! Thanks!

Where I'm from I believe it's called notarizing. Or is that something else?

Notarizing is when a notary public witnessess the true copy of a document.
Legalizing is when a foreign document "gets a stamp" recognizable by some other countries.
kilwinning -- I am not sure but you may need an APOSTILLE of the Hague Convention of 1961. "It abolished the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents. The Convention provides for the simplified certification of public (including notarized) documents to be used in countries that have joined the convention."

Thanks for all your replies. Have sorted it all out. For anyone's future reference... Foreign Commonwealth Office in London provides legalization of UK docs (can mail docs to them). HK High Court in Queensway provides legalization of HK docs. For some reason, The Netherlands has very stringent application procedures for passports and registering docs in the Netherlands. Getting a US passport will be easier!
