Here's the situation -- my fiancee and I have a 5 hour layover in Tokyo, on a Saturday, from 4 pm to 9 pm. We're trying to figure out if it's conceivable to get out of Tokyo Narita Airport, get to anyplace we would actually want to be for an hour or two, and get back to the airport in time for our flight to the US. So --
How far is Narita from the city? Travel time/ method on a Saturday?
Will we have customs problems getting in and out of Narita? ( US citizens).
Is this crazy to even try? Should we just play it safe and absorb the (gulp) 5 hour layover in the airport?
Would LOVE to get any thoughts/input from someone who knows Tokyo and the vicissitudes of Narita.
Thanks!

With since you are going to there anyway, you might as well take advantage of seeing Japan... There are trains to near cities right inside the airport. Depends on where you go, the cost vary on the fare...US citizens has free entries, so no problem with customs.. Downtown Narita is about 30 mins away. Or an alternative is to stay in and get a rub down or a massage, not expensive at all.

Check with the airlines whether it is possible to do so.
Otherwise stay in the airport. So much to do and see, shopping for Japanese souvenirs or have massage, take shower or nap, airport has lots of nooks and crannies for some peace and quiet.
Went to the U.S. last Nov. and did the above, four hours is gone so quickly.
Otherwise visit Narita temple near the city centre.

You could go to Naritasan Shinshoji Temple (Narita station) which is easily accessible by the Keisei Line(every 20 mins interval) at the airport(10 mins ride) and have a meal at the local restaurant.
Each of the airport terminal have a Tourist Information counter , so get more detailed info there.
2 things to take note of :
- sufficient Japanese currency for this short trip to cover misc expenses, including meals.
- Know your terminal for the departure flight, otherwise you will lose time in transf from 1 terminal to another
Terminal 1 > called Narita Airport
Terminal 2 > Airport Terminal 2
