Seriously thinking of getting a maltese terrier puppy for the kids. We have always had dogs and they really miss it.

Not sure where to go and need help. Maybe getting one from overseas or are the pet shops here safe?? A friend recently bought a puppy from a pet shop in Yeung Long and all seems fine.

Help please.

Many pet shops in HK churn out puppies according to the latest fads with little care for good breeding or care of the dogs, and discard puppies too old to sell and also the mummy dogs when they are used up. I would encourage you to check out the SPCA and HK Dog Rescue first. Both have sites to see dogs online. All the dog rescue centres in HK are full (literally) of many and varied dogs needing homes.

We would love to get one from those places but they do not have the type of dog we are looking for.

No I am not follwing the "local trend". After having dogs for the last 35 years and all big ones, we have decided we want a pure breed small dog and looking through the internet reading all about them, it suits our family with kids and apartment living. I would absolutely love to rescue a dog but 90% are of mixed breed which I don't want. I have already checked both the SPCA and HK dog rescue.

Most of the pet shops in HK carry animals born on local/overseas puppy farms and transported to HK too young - i.e. before properly weaned and still very cute. Some of the genetic problems these animals have might not appear for a few years.

If you must have a pure bred with its papers, you should contact the HK Kennel Club for local breeders or alternatively contact the Kennel Club in your "home" country and go to the breeders directly.

CAF has a few of them looking for a home. Check out their website- http://www.hkcaf.org/e_Urgent_Rescue_display.asp?offset=40
